This publication accompanied the multitier initiative In Common: Romare Bearden and New Approaches to Art, Race & Economy, which consisted of a three-day symposium and an exhibition.
The publication brings together a welcome address by Interim New School President Donna E. Shalala, and an introduction by Darrick Hamilton, Henry Cohen Professor of Economics and Urban Policy & Founding Director at The Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy, The New School. Essays on Bearden’s creative work and activism are penned by Henry A. J. Ramos, Senior Fellow at The Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy, and Wayne Winborne, Director, Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies. Romare Bearden Foundation Co-Director, Diedra Harris-Kelly contributes a biography on Bearden.
An essay accompanies the exhibition In Common: New Approaches with Romare Bearden, by curators Diedra Harris-Kelley and her Romare Bearden Foundation Co-Director Johanne Bryant-Reid, and VLC Senior Director/Chief Curator Carin Kuoni and Curator and Director of Programs Eriola Pira. Finally, the publication includes statements by each of the exhibiting artists on Bearden’s enduring influence alongside biographies, a checklist and installation images, and a full schedule of the symposium.
